One-off singles are nothing new for The Radio Dept. and following their last full-length, 2016’s Running Out Of Love, they’ve released a handful of new songs not attached to any album release cycle – one of the perks of being on their own label now, perhaps.
But when they released this new track in February of last year, it was accompanied with a preview of what they had planned as far as releasing new music went:
‘The Absence of Birds’ is a song about missing someone. And about forcing the hand of chance to make new and unexpected things happen. There’s more to come this year, ten or more songs will be released in some way or another during 2020. Release formats to be decided from what we feel suits the songs.

Obviously that’s not how things worked out. A second new song – “You Fear The Wrong Thing Baby” – followed in March, but nothing after that. It stands to reason those other eight or more tracks will see the light of day eventually, and given how good these songs have been – “Absence” is their most elegantly beautiful song in ages – they’ll be worth the wait.
