I would like to not take that lowest hanging of fruit and make some comment about having “cigarettes” in your band name demanding you play dreamy, atmospheric guitar music with reverb pedals turned up to 11, but Bubble Tea and Cigarettes and don’t make it easy.

Originally from New York, relocated to Los Angeles and now based out of Seattle, the duo of Ruinan Zhang (aka Kat) and Andi Wang trade in slow and languid yet slightly funky dreampop drenched in reverberation, but thankfully unlike their obvious comparison point, don’t include the embarrassingly (un)sexy lyricism.

Their 2024 second album We Should’ve Killed Each Other had enough artistic growth from their 2022 debut There’s Nothing But Pleasure to believe that they’ve got much better and varied things ahead of them – this non-album single, released a few weeks ago, comes from the same sessions as the second album, but as the duo say:

we wrote the song during the same period we wrote the album ‘we should’ve killed each other’. while we both love the song, it didn’t quite fit with the rest of the album. so it ended up becoming the bonus song for the Japanese version CD.

glad it’s finally out for streaming and YouTube ☺️ the video was shot on a dv by ourselves, on a perfect 🌌 trip in autumn NYC. we walked the city from LES to Williamsburg, holy crap. full of good memories from the time we wrote our first album…
