Just Mustard – “POLLYANNA”

Irish outfit Just Mustard exist in a liminal space between post-punk and shoegaze, and it’s a niche they’ve occupied well, create a uniquely abrasive atmosphere across two albums that, most recently, scored them a high profile slot opening for The Cure in South America in 2023.

Those waiting for a follow up to 2022’s Heart Under have had to be patient, particularly since the band seem to be, in very un-millennial fashion, reticent about doing much on socials. But that silence was broken this week with the announcement of a new single and a handful of international dates for this Fall.

From the opening thunderous distorto-bass that opens “POLLYANNA”, it’s clear that the band haven’t softened up in the interim one iota. Singer Katie Ball, however, seems to be singing more melodically which, if anything, makes their sonic brew even more lethal. She’s also directing their videos – of the clip that accompanies their new song, she says:

“We shot the video using different CCTV and vhs cameras around our hometown Dundalk trying to have as much fun as possible, the kind of fun that makes you feel sick almost instantly which suits the themes of the song,”

No official news on LP three, but I expect it to be out by Fall. Ears open.
