English trio Pale Blue Eyes having been honing their balance post-punk asceticism, indie jangle, New Wave synthesis, krautrock propulsiveness, and dreampop lushness over three records, most lately on New Place, released back in March. It’s a recipe that’s immediately familiar to those of a certain age or streaming service algorithm, but nudges on each genre slider in either direction keep the proceedings fresh.
At time it feels a little to safely constrained within their stylistic boundaries – pushing something into the red would add a little welcome zip – but thankfully Pale Blue Eyes also have one thing that exists outside of genre lanes, and that’s a great melodic sense that makes for solid earworming.
They’ve just announced a couple North American dates – well, Canadian – for November, but reason and economics would suggest that there’s more to come.
