Despite the fact that their DNA is purely post-punk, Dublin’s Fontaines D.C. have not yet graced these pages for a few reasons. One, there’s the fact that they’re already one of biggest ascendent young bands in the world right now, and hardly need more ink from a barely-read blog. Two, I’ve only become a proper fan with the last record, 2024’s Romance; not because I think it’s the first one to properly resonate with me or anything, but because I only actually gave them a proper listen last year. But we are now wholly team Fontaines in our house – my five-year old loves them, and will get up and dance whenever I put them on.
And I actually like coming to things a little late sometimes because there’s already a wealth of material to explore, and so I’ve been spreading my love equally across all their records lately (except debut Dogrel, which hasn’t done it for me yet). And so, as I touch down for a the short Dublin leg of my British Isles vacation, now is the time to share some Fontaines. “Televised Mind” appeared on their second album, 2020’s A Hero’s Death, and it rips.
And oh yeah, it’s the first Fontaines song I learned on guitar. They are a fun band to play, yes sir.
