Two bands does not a scene make, but one can’t help notice that Winnipeg has produced two new acts that are staking their claim in the new Canadian shoegaze/dreampop acts to watch. Winnipeg’s Living Hour has been getting international attention for their new record Internal Drone Infinity, and labelmate duo sundayclub has just put out their first EP in Bannatyne.
The dreamy electro-pop title track was released in June, and “Hallowe’en Mask” in September; the EP proper came out last week and rounds things out with another track and an alternate version of the title track. It builds a tasty sonic sandwich with Courtney Carmichael’s pillowy vocals resting on layers and layers of spidery, reverberant guitar lines, propelled by an insistent, gritty, drum machine. Simple, but sumptuous.
The duo are in town next Tuesday night for a show at Collective Arts and will be back (or maybe they’re just going to hang out for a week?) on November 25 for a free Manitoba artist showcase at The Horseshoe.
