The head of Jason Pierce must be an interesting place to be, on many levels, particularly when it comes to his approach to crafting Spiritualized records. In 2016, Sound On Sound took a deep dive into the band’s landmark 1997 album Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space with a specific focus on the record’s third single.

Pierce talked to them about how his approach on that record differed from Lazer Guided Melodies and Pure Phase with respect to instrumentation and orchestration. The fine detail, however, comes from conversations with engineer/mixer Darren Allison. Revisiting the studio where much of the sessions were tracked, he recounts how he came to work with Spiritualized and what it was like managing the technical side of channeling Pierce’s genius.
