For a non-single, Lush’s “Sunbathing” has had a few more versions than one might expect. Well, two. Which is two more than the zero I would have thought. An Emma Anderson composition, the song featured Miki Berenyi on lead vocals and originally appeared on Sweetness & Light, their second EP of 1990, and was compiled as part of Gala.
This demo, which apparently dates from 1989, is interesting in that it features the band’s original vocalist Meriel Barham before she left to join Pale Saints:
It wasn’t until 2005 and the first edition of the Never Lose That Feeling shoegaze tribute album that Anderson got to record her own song with her own voice, contributing a cover with her post-Lush project Sing-Sing.
And finally, a cover by someone completely unrelated to the band: Norwegian singer-songwriter Jenny Hval recorded a version for Bills & Aches & Blues, a 2021 tribute album with current 4AD artists covering past ones.
