Guy Chadwick went to ground for a few years after The House Of Love’s initial dissolution in 1994, eventually resurfacing in 1997 as a solo artist and with the assistance of Cocteau Twins’ Robin Guthrie, released a solo record in Lazy, Soft & Slow in 1998. It’s a pretty low-key affair of originals and one Iggy Pop cover, mostly acoustic but lushly arranged.
It seems to have disappeared from streaming services – makes me glad I went to the trouble of acquiring a CD copy a little while back – but in looking for it, I’ve found a couple of EPs released around it for singles “You’ve Really Got A Hold On Me” and “This Strength”, with their attendant b-sides for a total of five new Guy Chadwick songs I’ve not heard before, so I’ll chalk that up as a win.
The album is getting its first-ever vinyl release tomorrow courtesy of Optic Nerve, with the addition of two of the aforementioned b-sides, which were originally attached to the Japanese edition of the album. Being it’s a pretty low profile release – not even a cursory remaster – I’m not holding out hope that the album will return to streaming on Friday, so instead I’ll just dig out the CD and watch the video for “This Strength”, shot a lifetime ago in Barcelona.
