Spurred by recent solo activity by Savages drummer Fay Milton’s Goddess project and news of frontwoman Jehnny Beth’s upcoming solo record You Heartbreaker You (coming August 29), I’ve gone wandering through their back catalog and even though I was still well in the music media game when they came on the scene, I did not realize that their debut single released in July 2012 on Jehnny Beth’s own Pop Noire label, contained a song by them I’d never heard before.
“Flying To Berlin” was the A-side, and while the flip side “Husbands” was obviously more of a white hot blast of an introduction and would become one of their signature songs, “Berlin” has an awesome, menacing groove and plenty of strategic buzzsaw guitars. Why it never appeared again anywhere is beyond me, but I guess when you’ve got so much great material to start with and only make two records, you can afford to leave some stuff behind.
At least it made it to the early live set lists.
