Carrying on with the “hey I’m in Dublin” series: Just Mustard announced their return to action a couple months ago but haven’t yet revealed exactly what that return entails, at least with regards to new recordings. So while we wait, let’s go back to November 2019, when they released the single “Seven”.
Because of its non-album status, I often forget that it exists but it’s quite an important song in the band’s sonic evolution, functioning very much as a bridge between their 2018 debut Wednesday and 2022’s breakout Heart Under. Of the accompanying video, directed by frontwoman Katie Ball, they said:
We made the video for “Seven” with our friend Graham Patterson. Through the imagery we explored themes of perspective, perception and faith, taking inspiration from the lyrics. Most of the props in the video are things from my bedroom that we made into villains. We were interested in using mixed media in the storytelling so we included some paintings and made some stop motion animation too.

It has remained in favour, as well, remaining in the band’s live sets as recently as last year. It was in their 2021 Live In Dreams concert film, recorded and released in the midst of COVID lockdowns, and also in 2024 in performance for Other Voices at the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin.
