My Bloody Valentine – “You Made Me Realise”

I’ll probably be just about landing at home in Toronto when this post goes live, but still it seems appropriate to close out this trip with a nod to Ireland’s greatest ‘gazers, My Bloody Valentine, though the country’s claim on the band is not necessarily the strongest. Though they were formed in Dublin, only drummer Colm Ó Cíosóig is native Irish and Deb Googe and Belinda Butcher only joined the band after they relocated to London in 1985. But I was also in London this trip, so I’ll allow it.

“You Made Me Realise” is one of the band’s most famous songs, as it’s home to the 20-minute “holocaust” sonic detonation in their live shows, but it was actually not that easy to hear in its studio incarnation. It was the title track of a 1988 EP released in August of that year, as a sort of but not really preview of Isn’t Anything, which followed in November – none of the five songs appeared on the album. It only became widely available as part of the 2012 reissue campaign, appearing on the EPs 1988-1991 compilation.

It doesn’t appear on the streaming version of the compilation, which you may attribute to rights issues but in fact the songs from You Made Me Realise as well as Feed Me With Your Kiss, Glider, and Tremolo are all on services – they’re just listed as their original editions; the 1988-1991 comp only has the otherwise unreleased songs. This, I only discovered while writing this post.

The video for the song was remastered as part of the reissue campaign, so thanks for that.
