If you’ve been keeping up with Robin Guthrie’s via usual streaming services, you might think 2024’s Astoria EP was his last release and as far as “new” music goes, you’d be right, but swing by his Bandcamp and you’ll find he’s been going through his archives and releasing one-off “orphans” that might otherwise never have seen the light of day. Some are for purchase only but others are streamable, like both his offerings from 2025.
“Prayer” came out back in March, and a couple weeks ago he dropped “Under Two Blue Stars”; both considerably more upbeat and direct tunes than the gentle ambience that his solo work has generally offered; “Stars” in particular is a lovely, motorik-y bop. Both clock in at under three minutes, which is a bit frustrating, but on the other hand they just hitting “repeat” that much easier.
Of “Stars”, and its accompanying artwork, he says:
Yet another orphan from 2018, something else unused from the same project as ‘Prayer’ …It was indeed a busy year in the studio. Not sure I released much. Too busy recording, I guess.
