A lot of current Japanese shoegaze exists within its own distinct realm of domestic influences, incorporating enough J-pop, City Pop, emo, etc into its DNA that if someone were to enter the scene with only first-generation western artists as a reference point, they might reasonably not understand why it’s in the same conversation. For those people, we have burrrn. The Tokyo outfit is unapologetically committed to the My Bloody Valentine school of sound – albeit the gentler side – and… actually, I said most of this last year. Go there if you need an introduction.
Last year’s Without You ended a 13-year drought of new music from the band, and while it was just a short shower of sound, they followed it up this past Summer with Something Good, a digital EP comprised of a Venus Peter cover, an alternate version of a song from their 2013 debut Blaze Down His Way Like The Space Show, and two other unreleased songs.
The new version of “Shut My Eyes” takes a dollop of vaseline and smears it all over the original, softening edges and blurring focus; this is reflected in the new video treatment for the song which itself is kind of/totally a Loveless tribute.
And, just because, here’s the original version.
