As much as I was recently reflecting on the end of Chromatics, I would be remiss to not point out that there has actually been quite a bit of worthy post-Chromatics music from the various former members. In 2022, both guitarist Adam Miller and singer/guitarist Ruth Radelet put out records – an eponymous full-length for the former and an EP entitled The Other Side for the latter – and both, along with Chromatics drummer Nat Walker, worked together on a number of songs for the soundtrack to the video game Lost Records.
Over the years, Miller began performing under the name Inner Magic, quietly releasing a couple new singles in 2024. But it appears that Inner Magic is ready for the spotlight, as it’s now officially a duo with former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist Jeff Schroeder. They made their debut with a two-song EP, Underground, that features one original and a Spacemen 3 cover.
The title track features Miller on lead vocals – a role he filled in Chromatics’ early days and on select tracks in their later period – with guest backing vocals from Radelet. Miller and Radelet’s gentle voices, along with the strummy acoustics, keep things laid back while the sinewy electric guitar lines and electronic percussion give it an insistent drive and the combination of it all more than recalls the magic of their past works together.
More, please.
