I still remember clearly the dagger to the heart in 2004 when Luna announced they were splitting up. They were my favourite band, in a simpler time when people declared such things, and I took the farewell tour as an opportunity to go on my first rock’n’roll road trip. A few days after seeing their then-final Toronto show at Lee’s Palace, I went to Chicago for the first time to see one of their two shows at The Abbey Pub and the pics went up on my blog.
Imagine my surprise a year or so later when an email showed up in my inbox from Dean Wareham himself, asking if Rhino could license one of those photos for the liner notes of a DVD that was coming out about their farewell tour. One of my photos (of Sean Eden) forever part of a piece of memorabilia for my favourite band? And getting paid for the privilege? Yes, please.
That documentary film was released in 2006 as Tell Me Do You Miss Me: A Film About Luna by director Matthew Buzzell. I don’t recall if I had to buy a copy of the DVD myself, or if I got one as part of the license – probably the former – but I’m pleased to still have the physical release, because as a decidedly niche interest film, it barely/didn’t exist online for the longest time and after the band reunited in 2014, maybe a film about its dissolution didn’t seem so poignant anymore. But at least we still got a vinyl-only soundtrack of the film in 2019!
At some point (okay, November 2024) the whole film showed up on YouTube where it remains available for all to see, so if you’re a fan – devoted or casual – who never got a chance to watch the film, here’s your chance. And by pure coincidence of timing, A uber-Luna/G500 fansite Head Full Of Wishes posted their own recollections of the final/not-final shows in 2005 along with brief interviews with the band and Buzzell conducted when the doc was released at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2006.
