I spent Saturday night at a local club well past midnight catching a show – something I hadn’t done in many many years, and which my body is reminding me of why – but I didn’t want to miss the chance to catch local dreampop ascendants Tallies again. I had planned to see them way back at the end of 2020, but the rise of Omicron shut venues down just before that show and while they’ve done a couple hometown shows since their second album Patina came out, I haven’t been able to make it out.

I wrote about how terrific said sophomore effort was last Summer, but am back to both repeat that and also testify that the band’s live show is also more than excellent. I first saw them back in late 2018 opening up for Hatchie and thought they were alright but in the interim, they’ve improved tremendously. Bringing on a second guitarist to allow Sarah Cogan to focus on vocals was a wise move and the band bring an unexpectedly muscularity to go along with their shimmer and jangle. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of confirmed dates on their calendar but if you get the chance, don’t hesitate.

And because this isn’t actually going to be a site that does (many) live reviews, here’s a video from their 2019 self-titled debut. “Mother” isn’t as complex a song as they’d be writing a few years later, but acquits itself with its energy and enthusiasm.
