Here’s another entry from the promising Asian bands who may or may not still exist. Swiimers hail from Seoul, South Korea and released a handful of singles a few years ago that were compiled as a self-titled EP in 2016. Combining the delicacy of dreampop with some of the dynamism of post-rock and glitchy electronic textures, Swiimers are languid and lovely, the guitarwork in particular doing an exceptional job at sounding lush and spare at the same time – they know how to work a delay pedal.
They followed up with a few singles at the end of 2022 – all just as satisfying as their earlier releases – but have been radio silent since them in terms of both releases and updates to their socials. In the grand scheme of things, a year isn’t that long between musical dispatches; I hope they’re only hibernating and will return with more because nine songs – total – from them is simply not enough.
