XTC spent so much of their career as a studio-only entity, it’s easy to forget they were once a formidable live outfit. But thanks to this oft-bootlegged live performance, we have a document of the band at the peak of their on-stage powers – which happened to be right before it all came crashing down.
The February 10, 1982 performance at Markthalle in Hamburg – just two days before their landmark English Settlement was released – was originally broadcast live on West German television programme Rockpalast and took place just a little more than a month before Andy Partridge suffered a breakdown mid-show in Paris, forcing a European tour to be canceled and signalling the end of their days as a touring band.
