Ulrich Schnauss‘ take on the centrepiece of Slowdive’s Pygmalion was one of the standout tracks on the uniformly excellent Blue Skied an’ Clear, a 2002 tribute album assembled by German electronica label Morr Music. I’m of the belief that this comp in no small part helped elevate that record from its initial status as career-ending failure to genre-defining landmark.
It’s not a dramatic reinterpretation by any stretch, but that goes to show how ahead of its time Neil Halstead’s experiments with ambient and dance in 1994 were and also proved a gateway to electronica for shoegaze fans. The track was included in the 2005 reissue of Schnauss’ album Far Away Trains Passing By.
