The 30th anniversary edition of The Cure’s 1992 Show live set originally came out earlier this year as a double picture disc exclusive for Record Store Day this past Spring, but a regular black vinyl edition was set for general release next Friday, September 8. However, for whatever reason, I’m seeing the set already available for sale in a number of places so if they don’t have to wait, why should I?
Recorded over two nights at The Palace in Auburn, Michigan in 1992 while on tour for their mega-successful Wish, Show was also released as a full-length concert video of the same name. Curiously, despite being widely available, a good-quality version of the whole show has yet to make its way online. There’s a number of low-quality digitizations available, but still only less than half the whole DVD set. There’s also some HD remasters which look and sound great, but I can only find three or so.
So in lieu of everything, here’s the first song, or songs as the case may be. “Tape” is the name of the instrumental that opened all of The Cure’s shows on this tour, and it only appears on Show and the US/Australia-only EP Sideshow; it’s not even on the otherwise comprehensive 30th anniversary edition of Wish. But somehow, someone has the full version of the track, not mixed in with actual set opener “Open”. So if you want to just enjoy those three minutes of anticipation from 1992, keep scrolling.
