Is there a German word for “regrets for missing out on something that you had no idea existed at the time”? Or a Japanese one? Welcome to peak FOMO, a decade-plus ago edition. Specifically, Japanese indie rock legends Kinoko Teikoku and their two Toronto gigs way way way back in May 2014, presented by Next Music From Toyko (also in this file: Hitsujibungaku’s ridiculously intimate show at Soybomb in 2016), which I’ve mentioned – or beat myself up over – repeatedly in the past.
Having already come to town the year before after making a great noise both figuratively and literally with 2013’s Eureka, they returned with the follow-up EP Long Goodbye under their belts and their final indie release Fake World Wonderland due out that Fall.
There doesn’t seem to be any footage of their 2013 shows here, but the 2014 gigs – an intimate one at The Rivoli and a larger one at Lee’s Palace – are reasonably well-documented. The complete set of the former is available across five parts, and a few individual clips of the latter are available from different attendees/vantage points, including a non-embeddable clip of “Paranoid Parade”.
NOW was on hand for a short review of the Lee’s showcase and some pics, and NMFT had their own blog post recounting the glorious mayhem of the Rivoli show, from whence the pic comes from.
