Every once in a while – looks to be about an annual tradition – I’ll remember that I love I Break Horses, and wonder if they’ve been up to anything. I do this mostly by checking their socials and, at the very least, seek out proof of life. There’s been little to report since 2020’s Warnings, but that doesn’t mean that there’s been nothing. While little makes it onto their grid, their Instagram stories occasionally come to life and in February, links were posted to what appeared to be a new project between Maria Lindén and Swedish electronic artist Hidden Operator called Autorepeat. Specifics of what this was were not forthcoming, and so far we have a single track of the drone and sample variety on a Soundcloud to show for it.
But back to the Instagram grid. It would be foolish to read too much into it, but it’s still worthy of note that two new posts have gone up in the past few months, the first since 2021. Both are clips from live session performances circa Warnings, as much as video of Lindén performing in soft focus in a wheat field can be called a live session. The clip of “Depression Tourist” was posted in March, with a note of “It’s been too long. Hope to see you soon❤️”, and another for “Death Engine” without comment went up last week. What does it mean? Maybe something, maybe nothing. But one thing is for sure – I’m going to go listen to Hearts now.
