Total Wife – “peaches”

Nashville is not a city that comes to mind when you’re talking about shoegaze hotbeds, but that Total Wife resides in Music City is secondary to the fact that they’re also signed to Philadelphia Ameri-gaze powerhouse label Julia’s War. The prolific duo released their latest album Come Back Down last month, and like many of their peers, it’s a game of spot the influence but their RIYLs are different enough to make them stand out.

From shoegaze, they take MBV’s signature glide guitar bends and whispered vocals, but there’s also a healthy dollop of glitch-tronica jungle breakbeats that’ll be familiar to anyone who lived through the early ’00s. It’s a bit of a “you got chocolate in my peanut butter/you got peanut butter on my chocolate” scenario, but combined with some solid hooks and interesting production choices, makes for an engaging listen.

They previewed the album with a trio of tracks, but only “peaches” – a hazy standout that spotlights their ‘gazier inclinations – got a video. Of the song, they say:

“The guitar tracks on this song are sourced from a single take resampled over and over. The lyrics were written about a recording session that couldn’t happen because of a huge storm that took the power from East Nashville. The storm itself provided imagery to express feeling disconnected from close friends, and frustrated with external forces getting in the way of mending the relationship.”
