If you missed the news, shoegaze OGs Chapterhouse have decided that the 15-odd years since their last reunion tour is long enough and have turned their previously announced appearances at the Slide Away festivals this Spring into a full-on global tour. Following the UK dates came shows in South America and yesterday they released the North American shows around the Slide Away dates where they will perform their debut Whirlpool in its entirety (and presumably some more songs since that record is only 40 minutes).
Their previous reunion was in 2010 and at the time, I certainly figured that would be it the last one since the global shoegaze revival wasn’t even a pipe dream and the people who missed them in the ’90s had now crossed them off their bucket list. But even after putting the guitars and amps back in storage, the band remained just active enough with archival reissues that interest in the first wave of shoegazers would surely generate some lucrative offers. And here we are.
I’m pretty much all out of possible Whirlpool content and I’m not in the head space for critically reevaluating Blood Music, so instead I’ll offer up a selection of professionally-shot but low-resolution videos from their first reunion show back in November 2009 in London (not counting the warm-up show a few days prior). It’s not the whole show, but it’s a good taste of what we can expect – just adjust for being a little older and grayer.
