One of the more exciting/interesting new acts out of Japan to my ears is Tokyo’s Beachside talks. They made their debut last Winter with the Marble Town EP, which showcased their sweet, Sundays-esque jangly dreampop and if that was their whole vibe, that’d be more than enough. But the two new singles they’ve rolled out this year – “Cassis” came out back in March and “Big Sky” just arrived this week – reveal a much louder and rocking side that doesn’t compromise their delicate, melodic gifts. It just adds a Big Muff into the mix. I don’t take for granted that a full-length is necessarily in the pipeline – the Japanese seem perfectly happy to just drop singles and EPs all day long – but whatever else Beachside talks have coming, I am here for it.
There’s a lyric video for “Cassis” and a live reading of the song at a Dreamwaves showcase a year ago, already sounding fully formed.
