Hatchie – “Only One Laughing”

Hatchie is back with album number three this week, and provided a second sneak preview of Liquorice a few weeks ago with “Only One Laughing”. Like “Lose It Again”, which dropped in September with the album details, it finds Harriette Pilbeam very much playing to her strengths with some breezy Cocteaus-meets-Sundays jangle-pop.

Says Pillbeam of the song, and accompanying carnival worker video:

It’s one of my favourites from the album and was so fun to work on. I started the idea when I took myself on a writing trip in early 2023 to shake off the cobwebs. I started a couple of the other tracks that ended up on the album on that trip as well! This one started with me singing the bass line into a mic and came together in a matter of hours. Thanks to @joeagius for helping re-structure and produce the demo before we brought it to @jaysomband to finish in the studio in late 2024. And thank you to my housemate Hamish for letting me borrow his old Donut King badge for the music video

And also:

I wrote ‘Only One Laughing’ to air my frustrations with the state of the world and the position I found myself in at the time (early 2023). I wanted a rollicking song that felt like you were struggling to keep up with me basically ranting about the lack of control I felt over my life.
