I’ve gone down a Wire rabbit hole – more like a giant sinkhole, actually – of late, and there’s presently just too much to wrap my head around to try and compose some kind of meaningful post, so I won’t try just yet.
Instead, here’s one of the band’s few official music videos – this one the opening track from their 2002 comeback EP Read & Burn 01 as well as the 2003 album Send, which cherry-picked tracks from both it and the follow-up Read & Burn 02 and added some new ones. Of course, it omitted any selections from Read & Burn 03… on account of that coming out four years later. The song also appeared on their PF456 Redux release, which was described as:
Released at the same time as Send this was a limited edition vinyl album entitled PF456 Redux (pf456redux)(FORMERLY VPF6) which, in true Wire fashion, was an entirely separate item.
In the sprit of a polar opposite to the traditional “DJ friendly triple vinyl” concept the vinyl version of “send” is all the material from the CD release of “Send” plus all of the other tracks from “Read & Burn 01 & 02” edited to their barest essentials.
PF456 Redux
And which is again being re-released on Record Store Day this year as PF456 Deluxe with the songs in their original, unedited forms on a 2×10″, 1×7″ limited box set selling for three figures if you can even get your hands on one. It’s also the only way to get Send or the first two Read & Burns on vinyl. So yeah, that’s a decision that Wire collectors – which I now am, I guess – will have to make.
In any case, it’s the song that heralded the start of their fruitful, proflific, and ongoing second reunion/third act, and is a scorcher.
