Supercar – “Lucky”

Supercar – “Lucky”

The current explosion of Japanese shoegaze bands can usually be traced back to the early 2010s and the Kinoko Teikoku supernova, but if you go further back in time you’ll find the real big bang began in the late ’90s – not quite early enough to be contemporaries of the UK forebears, but certainly immediate descendants – and chief amongst those acts of that era are Supercar. Their 1998 debut Three Out Change!!! isn’t as sonically expansive as what would come after, but the influence of their fuzzed out guitars, indelible melodicism, and sweet co-ed vocals can be heard in almost every pop-tilted J-gaze of the past 30 years.

The second single from Three Out Change! was “Lucky”, which maybe isn’t as over the top hooky as “Cream Soda” or “(Am I) Confusing You” but that video can’t be touched so let that be our introduction to this great band, who lasted till 2005, evolving their sound electronic elements but always maintaining their tunefulness.

It’s not clear where these live clips came from (besides roughly 1998, 2002, 2003, and 2005), but they’re professionally-shot and mostly sound great so hooray for them.

And of course, you can gauge the importance of a track by the number of guitar cover videos it has – in this case, two!
