Robin Guthrie has had a pretty busy year by his standards, with the Cocteau Twins’ The Moon & The Melodies reissue in the Summer and his own Astoria and Atlas EPs of new music and a smattering of standalone archival tracks released on his Bandcamp. Additionally, today he has re-released on CD a couple of his older albums – 2009’s Carousel and 2011’s Emeralds. Of the releases, he says:
On Friday December 6th 2024 I’ll be re-issuing two of my earlier albums which have been out of print for quite some time now. In 2009 I released the album Carousel into a somewhat different world and in 2011 Emeralds likewise appeared for the first time. The original versions appeared on several labels and these new 2024 editions of the CD digipak versions on Soleil Après Minuit feature improved printing and audio faithful to the original versions.

He rarely plays live anymore – and certainly doesn’t make videos – but he did take Emeralds on the road to North America with fellow 4AD luminary Brendan Perry of Dead Can Dance in 2011 and at one of the stops, they did a session for KEXP that was recorded, so while it’s not a video from Carousel… it’s a live video circa Carousel, and it’s lovely. The whole session is.
All the above activity has also brought Guthrie into the press a little bit of late, as well. There’s a must-read interview with him at Guitar World:
