Ringo Deathstarr – “Kaleidoscope”

Austin’s Ringo Deathstarr are one of those bands that I’ve always meant to spend more time with than I have, despite having had ample opportunity – they’ve been at it for nearly 20 years – and having already even seen them live, but I just haven’t done more than a few drive-by passes through their discography.

I think part of the reason is that they’ve always seemed to be just a little too all over the place, as has been my approach. Like I’ll play a few tracks at random and really like them, then randomly listen to one of their records and it’ll not seem much like what I liked about them and I’ll wander off. But I think that’s more a me problem than a they problem, as they just like to play all kinds of stuff from classic MBV worshipping shoegaze to trippy JAMC cosplay psych to all out white noise and then something wholly original, and it’s all cool to them.

I know I like this one, though, from their 2011 debut Colour Trip, which finds the band putting their most melodic foot forward. I’ll even forgive them for putting those Fender Jazzmasters in danger on the beach – my own JM is almost identical to the Candy Apple Red one that Alex Gehring is swinging around.
