I appreciate that it seems like new singles from some bands seem like automatic posts – because they basically are – but I’d like to point out that it’s a really exciting time in the genre because there are these new acts who are putting out really great music and taking the sound forward, and not just the territory of the old guard and their copycats.

Londons deary is one of those, celebrated here so much since their arrival at the start of 2023 that’s it’s hard to believe that it’s only today that they’ve released their debut full-length album, Birding. They talked about why it took so long to put together a long-player with First Revival:

We intended to do an album a bit earlier, but I think it just didn’t feel right. I think we came into it because of the way the band started during lockdown, where me and Ben couldn’t actually meet up and play together. So we were sending ideas back and forth, but we needed to play these songs live, to play together and learn about our relationship with each other. Then we met Harry and it’s been a slow development. I think we needed that time to make music, share it and write songs we didn’t like, write songs that we love, and just get to a point where we know that we were going to write an album. We just needed to get to the right place, I think.

You can also find a more high-level, introducing the band interview at Japanese blog A-indie; I expect a lot more press will follow the record’s release, I’ll try to append them as I find them.

They released “Alma”, the last third and final preview track a couple weeks ago with a video that really delights in having cast twins in it. Says Cockram of the song:

I see ‘Alma’ as an embodiment of our band. It has been with us for a long time and changed with us along the way. In the past four years, we have grown into ourselves and have a much clearer idea of what deary is. In this song, I am talking to my younger self who made the decision to look after us and become a better person.
