Bubble Tea & Cigarettes – “bluebird”

Bubble Tea & Cigarettes – “bluebird”

Completely at odds with most prevailing trends in the shoegaze/dreampop space, Los Angeles’ Bubble Tea & Cigarettes make songs so delicate they sound as though made of spun glass. I missed their set last month headlining Loveless Fest, but did catch them last year at The Drake Underground and while I was expecting something exceedingly quiet, I was still surprised how quiet vocalist Kat was – and somehow even quieter when speaking between songs and not singing – yet how muscular their sound was. Very lean, being just a three-piece, but muscular. Long a long distance runner.

They gave an interview about making their first two albums and what might come next to Demo:

And the EP they mentioned in the interview came out pretty much right when they took the stage in Toronto. They framed the new EP bluebook as follows”

these two songs are probably the ones we spent the most time on ever – recording and re-recording layers and layers of vocals, iterating on the strings arrangement, second guessing the lyrics, making our own music video from scratch… lots of love was poured into these songs, and we simply hope perhaps they took you to somewhere beautiful…

And on releasing a video for “bluebird”, shot and edited on 8mm film themselves, they add:

The two songs felt like confessions between two lovers, and we thought it’s the best that they get released together in this form
