We are somehow almost four and a half years on from the last Warpaint record, 2022’s Radiate Like This, and while they’ve not been completely out of sight – they played one show this year, their first since 2024, at the behest of Harry Styles – they haven’t teased much activity either… until now. Or last week, to be precise.
The band announced that will release their first live record in Artifact, due out December 11. It compiles a double-vinyl’s worth of live recordings taken from the 2022 Radiate dates as well as the 2024 Exquisite Corpse anniversary tour, and from the two preview tracks, they’re exquisitely intimate-sounding recordings that should do justice to the band’s intricate arrangements and stellar musicianship. And oh yeah, their fantastic songwriting. Those previews come with visualizers but they’re not video of the actual live performances – just looped clips – because this is a live album, yo.
So with that in mind, I’m going back to that debut EP and the video for the first single which I’ve actually never seen. Dating to 2009 and featuring Emily, Theresa, and JennyLee in Angeles National Park, outside Los Angeles. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt that playing with sparklers there just months after the devastating Station Fire was actually a good idea. It’s interesting to see the band presented as a trio, what with original drummer Shannyn Sossamon having departed the band to focus on that acting thing and current drummer Stella Mozgawa not yet in the picture.
