When Kurayamisaka dropped their long-awaited full-length debut kurayamisaka yori ai wo komete last month, I commented that it was odd that for such a long-awaited record, the release rollout was surprisingly muted as far as new content goes (though one could argue that a new album is plenty of new content).
As it turns out I was just a little ahead of myself, as they released a new video for “Metro” the following week. It’s a sequel of sorts to the clip for “Sekisei Inko”, released in April, with the same director (Kei Murotani) and actress (蘭). It’s unclear if there’s meant to be an actual narrative connection, but they’re certainly similar aesthetically and thematically, though in the earlier video she wanders a small Japanese town while the band plays in an underpass and the countryside, while in the new one the setting is more urban (she catches a bus!) and the band are set up in an industrial lot and under a wind turbine.
They talk a bit about the influences on the song in an interview with guitarist Shimizu Shotaro at Tower Records’ magazine Mikiki:
–When I listened to “Metro” on this album, “Kurayamisaka Yori Ai Wo Komete,” I automatically imagined ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION. What specific references and sound direction did you use to create this song?
“This song is packed with what I consider to be a cool rock band. Of course, there is some influence from ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION in the way the song fits into the flow of the album and in the overall sound, but the biggest influence on this song is the sound of a band called I Have a Hurt.”

And oh hey, guitar cover video!
And if you can’t follow the fingers… MIDI-powered tablature video? Drop D for all guitars, FYI.
