Swervedriver – “Son Of Mustang Ford”

In honour of Swervedriver announcing the North American leg of their Raise 35th anniversary tour – in which they will play the entirety of their 1991 debut album Raise alongside another set of favourites – here’s the promo clip for the first single from the album, “Son Of Mustang Ford”, aka the song which forever entrenched the band as “the shoegazers who write songs about cars instead of lying around in grassy fields”, which was released in July 1990, over a year before Raise would officially come out.

Of course, the excitement about the Raise recital is tempered a bit by the fact that I saw them do it already for the record’s 25th anniversary alongside a full Mezcal Head runthrough at Lee’s Palace in September 2017 but honestly, I’m not complaining. It will have been almost seven years since they were last in town so they can play whatever the heck they want.

Swervedriver is definitely one of those bands whose video catalog could use a remaster. There’s certainly an old school charm to the low resolution artifacting of these fan-uploaded clips, and the audio is at least decent, but how great would it be to be able to see exactly what kind of weird super-Strat Adam Franklin is rocking instead of this signature Fender Jazzmaster? At least a little great.

But for Jazzmaster content, here’s a guitar lesson courtesy of Sparky Guitar; it’s only in drop-D so way easier to play than, say, “Duel”. That is a fucking beast to tune.
