When RAY dropped a new standalone single in “Sagittarius” in the last days of 2025 I was quite excited, not just because it was another release in a busy year from the alt-idol group, but because it was an unexpected songwriting collaboration with Kurayamisaka, who themselves were capping a great and busy year, and it was a banger of a tuner that showcased the strengths of both acts.
Well apparently Kurayamisaka liked the song so much, they’ve recorded and released their own version of it. Since they played on RAY’s version, the instrumentation sounds almost identical to theirs (it is different though, unless I’m hearing differences in mixing or mastering) but obviously you now have Sachi Naito’s vocals overtop instead of RAY’s rotation of voices. Unsurprisingly, it feels like a more natural fit and very much like a Kurayamisaka song, but that it also worked so well as a RAY tune is a testament to how versatile they are musically, to say nothing of the choreography that goes with their live performances.
And here’s the aforementioned live RAY performance, recorded in Shibuya just days after the single’s release overtop recorded backing, and another from last month with double live drummers (and recorded guitars/bass).
