It’s been a poorly kept secret for years now that there were Mojave 3 reissues coming from 4AD at some point, but details had been less than vague until recently. Back in April 4AD released a limited edition run of their 1995 debut Ask Me Tomorrow as part of the Rough Trade 50 reissue series, but that was limited to 1000 pieces sold exclusively through the retailer and of course, sold out immediately. This was the second reissue of Tomorrow, following the 500-piece release by Sonic Cathedral back in 2017, but given that the latest edition came fully remastered at Abbey Road in London, consensus seemed to be that the new edition was sonically superior.
Then last month, some listings leaked on Amazon and a few other retailers confirming reissues coming for at least a couple of the other albums on vinyl and others on CD scheduled for July 24. Well as of yesterday, the full details of the campaign were announced, and they’re lovely. All five Mojave 3 albums have gotten the Abbey Road remaster treatment, and in addition to being released individually on vinyl and CD, were coming in a box set limited to an edition of 1500. Now I’m not big on artificial scarcity or anything, but considering that Mojave 3 were one of my favourite bands of all time – without them in my life, I wouldn’t have found Slowdive, at least not when I did – I had to do it. I can live next to my Luna box set.
I’ve done my part to keep the Mojave 3 flame alive since they went on hiatus in 2013 – which is now officially permanent – so now that there’s something actually happening with the band – albeit just archival – I’ve got a few more things lined up to pay tribute/pour one out. But for now, here’s a video I thought for sure I’d already shared but as it turns out I had not. Featuring Rachel glammed up as a slow motion lounge singer, “Love Songs On The Radio” was the lead single from the band’s debut Ask Me Tomorrow and the first dispatch from the band in their new identity. And as much as it was sonically a world away from Pygmalion, it also unquestioningly shared its DNA with that record through the space around the sounds.
More Mojave 3 love coming soon. I won’t have this chance again.
