Plant Cell – “Shine”

There’s not much on Just For A Life, a tribute album to Slowdive curated by now-defunct shoegaze blog The Blog That Celebrates Itself, that would have caught my eye or ear when it was released in 2017 – I knew the songs, obviously, but none of the artists. Ten years later, I still have never heard of most of the bands but the one that I do know – Tokyo’s Plant Cell – has become a favourite and so finding this track, buried near the end of the very-long tracklist, was a real find.

Their own compositions tend toward the effervescent and they somehow deliver on their “nature shoegaze orchestra” credo, so their choice of “Shine”, from the 1991 Holding Our Breath EP, is a fitting choice to cover. The original blooms majestically and bends to the sun, and vocalist Erikoro somehow manages to take Rachel Goswell’s original vocals even more skyward. The coda of “Golden Hair” is just a lovely little touch of gravy.
