When Warpaint announced details of their fourth album Radiate Like This last month, I was a little surprised to not see “Lilys” in the tracklist, as was the first sign that the band were finally back in action after they wound down touring in support of Heads Up in late 2019.

The song – and the band – appeared in the 2021 TV show Made For Love, performing a private concert for Cristin Milioti’s character, and it was great to see the band performing again, even if it was briefly and in silhouette. The new song was great as well, too good to be relegated to a one-off but if that speaks to the quality of what’s going to be on Radiate, I’m excited.

In talking to NME last year, Theresa Wayman explained how the show begat the song, and in a way the album, not to mention a rather expansive interview:

The HBO show wanted to use it and so that made us finish it faster. And then the label heard it and were like, ‘Actually, we want to put this out not just have it be on the show’. It wasn’t like we started writing our album and were like, ‘OK this song is going to be the one we come out with’, but I’m happy that it’s the one leading the way. The song is asserting itself.
