Listicles are dodgy propositions, most of them being clickbait done with minimal effort. Hell, most these days probably aren’t even done by wage slave interns like the good old days – they’re almost certainly all AI now. So it’s very refreshing to find ones like this treat from Bandcamp last week that seeks to introduce the reader/listener to new-to-them artists from the world of shoegaze, reaching across all eras.
Classified into “Experimental Shoegaze”, “Recent Classics”, and “Classic Era”, the selections have a few familiar names but a lot more completely new to me. It’s a testament to the quality of Bandcamp’s editorial that everything included is stylistically diverse without getting too contentious about what is or is not “shoegaze”, and is even sequenced well as a mix. I, particularly, liked the tracks by Guitar, No Joy (whom I’ve always needed to give more time to), and Knifeplay but it’s all good.
Head over, hit play, bliss out.
