Just in case you think my explorations of Asian shoegazers is limited to acts coming out of Japan, I direct you to Manic Sheep, who hail from Taipei, Taiwan. “No More Anger” was a single taken from their second album, 2016’s Brooklyn, and if the Ameri-centric album title wasn’t a tip off, there’s very little cultural divide to navigate here. Guitars roar and jangle and enough of the lyrics are in English to be welcoming – particularly the cursing – and the vocal hook is irresistible in any language.
And yes it galls me a bit that they actually came to Toronto to play Canadian Musicfest back in 2013, and I missed them. Maybe there’s a downside to dismissing a festival’s entire lineup out of hand?
