Lush with Neil Halstead – “Ciao!”, live at The Odeon, Cleveland – May 1996

The Marvel Team-Up I didn’t know I needed… in the Spring of 1996, Lush toured the US with Mojave 3 on what they called the Sharing The Pavement tour in Spring of 1996. The pairing made sense from the perspective of them being 4AD labelmates as well as leading lights of shoegaze in past lives, but by this point Lush had pivoted to Britpop with Lovelife while M3 were trying to establish their new countrified persona with their debut Ask Me Tomorrow and leave the shadows of Slowdive behind.

Still, it would have been a dream bill then as it would be now, and it’s pretty clear the bands were having fun with it too. In this clip, you’ve got Mojave 3/Slowdive frontman Neil Halstead joining the headliners for breakup bop “Ciao!”, taking on Jarvis Cocker’s role in the duet. Halstead’s warm, confessional vocals are a far cry from Cocker’s dry sardonic delivery but he seems to be having fun with it.
