The most famous anonymous person in Korean indie – at least from the shoegazing perspective – is Parannoul. Hihs 2023 opus After The Magic continues to stand as a monument of the genre, at least in recent years, and last week he released what would appear to be his first new work since those sessions.
That’s speculation, of course, because the new song comes without any kind of context, just a simple video of lo-fi shots of sunsets and sunset-alike-visuals. But for those looking for more insight into he who is Parannoul, this recent feature at Pitchfork about the burgeoning indie scene in Seoul, South Korea and his influence on it, is quite revealing. It covers his origins as an anonymous bedroom producer whose music tapped into a zeitgeist of sorts; too much good stuff to pullquote, but if you’re interested in the Korean corner of the Asian-gaze scene, it’s a must-read.
