Yesterday marked the 30th birthday of Slowdive’s debut full-length, Just For A Day, and in looking for something to post in commemoration of the event – I already posted one of the only videos from the record a few months ago – and in doing so I found this interesting artifact dating back to the record’s release three decades ago, apparently by the US label SBK to introduce the band to North America.
It’s a promotional clip entitled “Poetic Frenzy” that audio interviews with Neil Halstead, Simon Scott, and Nick Chaplin about the band’s ethos and artistic intentions overtop the videos for “Shine” and “Catch The Breeze”, though curiously the segment of them discussing “Catch The Breeze” plays overtop the video for “Morningrise”…
As for the two clips, it’s interesting that “Shine” and “Morningrise” were uploaded to the band’s YouTube channel in high-def, remastered form, but “Catch The Breeze” was not and exists only as a low quality fan upload. Subtle disavowal? Can’t find the original tapes? Who knows. But happy birthday, Just For A Day.
