One of the fun things about shoegaze as a genre is that being musically on the nose isn’t a detriment; in fact, for a lot of fans, it’s a plus. Phoenix, Arizona’s Glixen certainly sound like a lot of bands you’ve heard before – in fact, a lot of bands you’ve heard right here – but that doesn’t change the fact that their shoegaze-dreampop hits the spot, that spot being a lot of Loveless worship.
They released their debut EP She Only Said – I will assume the title is a knowing nod – back in August, and are setting out on a tour next Spring with Glitterer to support (March 5 at The Velvet Underground, for Torontonians). This is how I came to hear of them, because when I see you described as “shoegaze” in a show announcement coming to town, sure I’ll give a listen. Of course I can’t go – family commitments – but you should.
They released a video for one of the singles from the EP back in the Spring, but the song itself has been kicking around for some years – they released a live version three years ago during peak quarantine days. Their social distancing skills are questionable but at least they masked!
