It was announced on Monday that Lush’s Gala – the 1990 compilation of the band’s early EPs which are generally regarded as their first album but really is not – would be getting a 35th anniversary reissue on November 7. Newly remastered, the triple vinyl edition will contain the three component EPs – Scar, Mad Love, and Sweetness and Light – as individual discs with a couple of bonus tracks that appeared on the original CD issue as an extra 7″ single. This almost completes the reissue series as their actual studio albums were given the remaster-reissue treatment last year, but not quite. Canada and Japan-only Lovelife-era b-sides comp Topolino is still outstanding on was, but considering it was included in the 2015 Chorus box set, it stands to reason they’ll get to it eventually.
Now normally I’d take the occasion to post one of the original videos from those releases, but as it happens I’ve already done that. Thankfully, former frontwoman Miki Berenyi is to the rescue with a new single and video, separate from this year’s Tripla, to go with the start of their North American tour – advertised as their first and last ever, due to guitarist Moose’s refusal to ever get on a plane again – which is set to kick off in a couple weeks.
Says bandmember Oliver Cherer of “Doldrum Days”, a crystalline track which comes with a stylish video focusing on fish and fingers, courtesy of Martin Andersen:
The lyric is about the spaces between places where interesting things can happen. The scenario is borrowed from Erskine Childers’ novel The Riddle of the Sands, but really it’s about being lost, stranded, unmotivated and bored, and what a potentially fertile or dangerous place that can be
