Cephalo / Gloaming Point

A large part of Cephalo’s ascent in the ranks of Japanese shoegaze was the rate at which they released material, starting with their debut EP Wind Surfing School in mid-2024 and the full-length Fluorite Code at the end of that year. They followed it up with the Gloaming Point EP last November accompanied by a video for「ヴェイパーロード」(“Vapor Road”), which felt lifted from a feature film for the quality of its cinematic direction and visuals.

As it turns out, it actually was. Well, not feature-length, but the entire EP was written as a soundtrack for an accompanying short film of the same name that was premiered at a screening/concert from the band in February of this year. For those not fortunate enough to be able to attend in person, the film was eventually released on YouTube in April and documents an unusual road trip between the two leads, and while the band’s emo-gaze-pop music isn’t what you’d immediately consider to be soundtrack-suitable, it’s integrated into the film quite well.

There’s a review of the concert-screening at Teppen!:
