Like many of their ’90s-era brethren, Swervedriver are a band who know their way around a b-side. Indeed, some of their most fan-favourite cuts don’t even appear on their studio albums, and are hard to lay ears on. And so it was a pretty big deal, if a quietly-announced one, that at the end of last year, they remastered and compiled all their early non-album tracks from their singles and EPs onto a couple of digital collections.

Honey Heavens Above covers the material that accompanied singles from their 1990 debut Raise, while Youth At The Summit collects tracks from 1993 through 1999, circa Mezcal Head, Ejector Seat Reservation, and 99th Dream. Together, it’s an embarrassment of riches, fully two probably-new-to-you albums of classic-era Swervies. Yes, some of the gold appeared on the 2005 compilation Juggernaut Rides, but that double-CD set is long out of print and pricey when you can find it.

I was going to make mention of this when doing my big Swervedriver press roundup a few weeks ago, but figured a) that post was was long enough, and b) this week, with Bandcamp Friday just days away, now would be more timely. So sure, stream away, but also make with the ‘Buy’ – 10 quid per collection isn’t so much. And if you prefer something more tangible, note that they’ve pressed 1000 copies of Petroleum Spirit Daze – a remastered rechristening of their 1990 Son Of Mustang Ford 12″. So buy that instead, or as well.
