That The House Of Love’s first new track in almost a decade doesn’t sound anything like their classic, first-run material probably shouldn’t be a surprise. Neither 2005’s Days Run Away or 2013’s She Paints Words In Red revisited the elegant dream-pop of their 20th century albums, despite the presence of original guitarist Terry Bickers in the lineup.
Now, with a whole new lineup backing Guy Chadwick, there’s even less reason to hope for shimmering, delay-laden guitar lines underpinning his songs. No, based on the first sample of their forthcoming album A State Of Grace – the video is out now, the album is out September 16 – there’s going to be bluesy slide guitar and gospel choirs… If you want to draw a line between their State Of Grace and maybe Spiritualized’s pivot on Amazing Grace, I won’t stop you.
But hey, for the old-schoolers, there’s still the Burn Down The World Fontana-era box set out in a couple weeks.
